Atul Gawande shares one of his enlightening moments as a doctor caring for a patient who was difficult to like – a convict full of hate. As he narrated the story in his commencement address to the graduating class of U.C.L.A. Medical School on June 1, 2018, he shared the lesson of that moment – curiosity leads to empathy, empathy breeds a sense a equality for every human life.
